The goal of the Space Mobility Research Group is to understand how spacecraft move by modeling, characterizing, and manipulating forces that act on spacecraft. We are particularly interested in research questions that combine knowledge in both the underlying spaceflight mechanics and the propulsion system (e.g., VLEO flight with air-breathing propulsion and precision control with electrospray thrusters).

For prospective PhD students, please apply to the University of Michigan Department of Aerospace Engineering graduate programs (details), and note in your application that you are interested in working with Oliver Jia-Richards. After you have submitted your application, I would be happy to set up a meeting (in-person or virtual) to discuss your research interests. Please email me ([email protected]) and attach a resume/CV along with an example deliverable from a prior project (publication, project report, etc.).
